SACRAMENTO — Ever long to look up details on school demographics and academic performance as easily as you search for nearby movie showtimes or map directions on your smart phone? A new mobile app, launched for the first time by the California Department of Education, will offer detailed contact information and performance data about the state’s 10,000 public schools.
The CA Schools mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android systems, lets users pinpoint nearby schools based on their current location and easily access a wealth of details, including the schools’ demographics, test scores and its California School Dashboard profile page. It also allows users to look up this data on schools by city, county, school district and ZIP code, as well as search specifically for charter schools and private schools.
“Never before have we put so much school information literally in the hands of our students, parents and community members and made the information so accessible and user-friendly,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said in a statement. “Home buyers can check out schools in their prospective neighborhoods. Parents heading to a child’s away game can map directions to the host school. There are all kinds of potential uses.”
The CA Schools Mobile App draws upon the same data as the California Department of Education’s California School Directory. And it has website links to a school’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, also known as CAASPP, test results.
